across the plain at an average altitude of around 730 metres (a former glacial lake) and is crossed by the Romanche river.<\/p>\n<p>As well as a wealth of human sporting activities, it is also home to a rich and varied mineralogy.<\/p>\n<p>It is part of the world&#8217;s cycling heritage, having contributed to the legend of the Tour de France and the start of famous cycling events (ALPE
